Don’t Just Survive this Allergy Season...Thrive

Are you one of the 50 million Americans who dread the coming of fall?

Do the changing colors make you think of just one thing: hayfever?

If you run for the over-the-counter nasal sprays, antihistamines or inhalers when sneezing and watery eyes announce that the allergy season is here, then it’s time to look for long-term relief. You shouldn’t suffer through what should be one of the most pleasant times of the year to enjoy the outdoors.

So...I’d like to share some survival strategies to add to your allergy-fighting arsenal and tell you about one of the therapies we’re using to help our patients. But first, a little background education...

Why Do Allergies Develop?

Allergies are actually a sign that your immune system is working properly. You see, the first time your body encounters an allergen (particles your body considers foreign) – pet dander, pollen, peanuts—an antibody specific to that allergen tags it so that your defense system can quickly recognize and deal with it.

Then, each subsequent time your body comes in contact with that particular allergen, within minutes, your body recognizes it and releases powerful defenses to rid your body of the intruder. Symptoms you may associate with allergies include runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, cough, itchy eyes. You can see a more detailed description in this video…

What's surprising is that most people with chronic allergies are shocked to learn how many things, common things, they are sensitive to...things that cause stress to the body. The list is so large that they could never avoid all of them, even for a day. Bombarded, your immune system can quickly become overworked and overwhelmed.

How many of these do you experience every day?

  • emotional stress

  • -electromagnetic stress from power lines,

  • cell phones, computers

  • -chemical and toxin stress: antibiotics, fertilizers, dyes and pesticides in our food, cleaning solutions, laundry soap, vaccines, perfume

  • physical stress from over-exertion/strain or eating a poor-quality diet with lots of processed, sugary food

  • and then there’s genetics (though it plays a much smaller role than the medical world might have you believe)...

All of this stress increases your risk of developing chronic allergies which will weaken the immune system and may lead to chronic disease. Much like plugging too many appliances into an electrical outlet and blowing a fuse, your system becomes overloaded and goes down.

Build Health

So, if all life’s stress is causing the overwhelm your body is going through...what’s the solution?

Simply put...you have to build your health. As you become healthier, your body can tolerate more allergy triggers before a reaction occurs. This is done by limiting undue stress and at the same time clearing out the effects that prior stress has placed on your body. This “Relax and Reset” allows your body to heal. The effect is better health, better function and fewer symptoms.

Many people aren’t aware that lifestyle habits may influence your allergy symptoms. Improving your diet, moderate exercise and relieving stress are essential to a healthy, allergy-free life. Check out our "8 Tips for Surviving Allergy Season" here…
